Avon football tops Le Roy to stay unbeaten

AVON — It went back and forth, but it was the Avon Braves who finished on top 34-20 Friday night as they hosted the Le Roy Oatkan Knights in a LCAA D-II showdown.

The game featured the power running of the Knights with their 1-2 punch of Tommy McQuillan and Dylan Johnson versus the big play ability of Avon’s Brandon Fuentes and Zack Pumputis.

If the game were only two quarters long, it would have been the Knights who came home with the win, as they marched up and down the field for a 20-13 lead at the break.

But the Braves buckled down to stop the run in the second half, and it was all Avon as the senior Fuentes danced his way to two more of his game high four touchdowns while Pumputis added the fifth for the final score.

Fuentes finished with 170 yards on just 10 carries.

Defensively, Pumputis had 12 tackles and two interceptions while Danny Welch added 20 tackles and two fumble recoveries. George Spezzano tacked on 17l tackles for the Braves.

McQuillen rushed for three touchdowns for the Knights.

“This has been a long time coming,” said Avon coach Andy Englert. “There have been some close ones, but it’s the first time we’ve beaten LeRoy on our home field since I’ve been here.”

Avon stayed unbeaten at 3-0 while Le Roy dropped to 1-2.
