Rochester Mayor to spend $2 million more on inner loop
Only months after Sen. Chuck Schumer’s failed effort to obtain some $15 million in funding to fill Rochester’s infamous Inner Loop roadway, Mayor Tom Richards is ready to spend more money on the project. This time the Mayor wants to shell out some $2 million in Federal funds to redesign the project in hopes of being more successfull in obtaining the total $15 million. Sen. Schumer had trumpted his support for the project and had vowed to obtain the money by hook or by crook. However, at the same time that the Rochester project was turned down, a similar project in Buffalo was mysteriously awarded the money to begin work. The cost of that project was also $15 million. Schumer alleged that the Rochester project was rejected because it was incomplete. “There were certain things missing in the application,” the Senator told reporters. “Ray LaHood, the transportation secretary said, ‘It’s a very good project but I can’t grant it because they’re missing certain things. And if they apply in the second round, and they correct these things, they’ll be no guarantees, but they’ll have a very good shot.’”
The Inner loop is sub-surface highway that encircles Downtown Rochester. I has been criticized as a blockcade to development in the downtown area.
