Men’s group to construct new building at Camp Cherith

For the past 38 years, Bob Weir has hosted twice-monthly meetings of The Nunda Christian Men’s Group Saturday mornings in the basement recreation room of his home at 68 Mill Street.

Bob, a former mayor of Nunda and retiree from RG&E, is the only active charter member, but every meeting still draws an upwards of about 25 men for coffee, conversation, prayer, fellowship and planning.

The members arrive from a wide radius about Nunda, hailing from Dansville, Hermitage, Castile and Fillmore. Beside the meetings at Bob’s home, the group hosts a spring fundraiser and auction, an appreciation dinner in September and two annual breakfasts.

Every meeting features a 15 minute speaker. A frequent topic is Christian charity. Indeed, the group is usually involved in a project which will assist an individual or worthy organization.

In particular, the Nunda Christian Men’s Group has a long time affiliation with Camp Cherith, the 125 acre Bible-based camp in the Town of Portage. About 300 young ladies attend each summer.

The group assisted the construction of three new log cabins built at the camp during 2010-11, and will be hosting its 2012 auction and spaghetti dinner on May 12 at Camp Cherith.

The group’s main undertaking for 2012 will be the first phase construction of a much needed maintenance building for the camp. The existing maintenance building, housed in a one-time chicken coop, is ready to give up the ghost, Bob notes.

Plans call for a 32-by-48 foot structure with poles, metal siding and roof in place by autumn, then a cement floor, electrical installations and other interior items in 2013. Total estimate for materials is $22,000.

While the group itself will be contributing both cash and labor towards the project, they could use some help with the cash component, Bob says. Anyone who would like to help out can call Bob at 468-5515 to get more information.

Checks can be made to Camp Cherith, annotated for the Maintenance Building Project, and mailed to Robert Weir, 68 Mill Street, Nunda, NY 14517.
