Girl Scouts compete in rope runner derby
Cub Scouts have their pinewood derby; Girl Scouts have their rope runner derby.
Cal-Mum Girl Scouts tried something new this year for their annual Me and My Guy event. The girls teamed up with their favorite guy to create their own unique rope runner. Rope runners are a decorated wooden figure or doll that balances on a central wheel.
The runners glide down an inclined rope for races, fun, and show.
The new event drew a lot of enthusiasm. On Feb. 25, 47 girls entered their creative rope runner in the derby, held at Cal-Mum Elementary School.
Supported by their families and friends, the girls watched their runners race against each other down the 25-foot rope to the finish. The girls voted for their favorite rope runner in several categories: funniest, creativity, cutest and overall favorite.
Several winners were named in each age group.
First Place – Gracie Boudreau, Madeline O’Reilly, Isabella Simon, Angela Olcott.
Second Place – Rylee Ruch, Jada Gerber, Zoie Englehardt, Natalie Spezzano.
Third Place – Aubrey Waterman, Abby McIlwaine, Madeline Spear, Lydia Johnston.
Cutest – Isabella Cochran, Halie VanDyne;
Funniest – Meghan Ward, Madison Jake, Lydia Johnston, Autumn Jeffery;
Favorite – Aubrey Waterman, Jada Gerber, Elizabeth Livermore, Natalie Spezzano;
Most creative – Sara Menke and Sydney DeCamp.
Overall derby winners are first place – Angela Olcott, second place – Gracie Boudreau and third place – Isabella Simon.
Troop leaders say the girls really had a lot of fun and they plan to participate in the rope runner derby again next year.
