Tire iron assault sends brawler to the hospital

Matthew Norstrand was arrested for Assault in the Third Degree after allegedly striking Austin Costrino of Holley with a tire iron. Police allege that Costrino threatened Norstrand with a knife.
Twenty-six year old Austin Costrino of Holley was charged with menacing in the second degree. Matthew Norstrand of Batavia faces charges of assault in the third degree and criminal mischief in the fourth degree. Both men were issued appearance tickets.
According to Caledonia Police, Costrino’s father notified them the following morning, on March 22, that his son had been injured in a fight that took place in the Village of Caledonia the night before. He reported to police that his son was in the trauma unit at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester with skull fractures and facial injuries. The police investigation found that no one had called CPD or 911 at the time of the incident.
Officer Matthew Heneghan conducted the investigation and questioning of six adults who were involved. Police say a verbal argument between the two men escalated. Costrino allegedly displayed a knife before getting into his car and driving back to the area where Norstrand was and continued to banter. In the meantime, Norstrand retrieved a tire iron and when Costrino attempted to get out of his car he hit the car and Costrino several times.
