Cal-Mum baseball captures LCAA D-II title

CALEDONIA — Impressive.

That’s an easy word to describe Caledonia-Mumford’s 23-7 victory over visiting Avon Thursday afternoon in Livingston Conference action.

The victory gave the Red Raiders (12-5 overall) sole possession of the D-II title with a 6-2 record. A loss would have meant they would’ve had to share it with Le Roy. But those thoughts were put to rest early as Cal-Mum’s offense peppered Avon starting pitcher TJ Crye with seven runs in the first inning, and then lit the Braves up for eight more runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead.

Kyle Sickles had a big game as he went 3-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored while Jake McEwen was 3-5 with a triple, four RBIs, and four runs scored for Cal-Mum (12-5 overall). Jon Voos went 3-3 with a double, two RBIs, and three runs scored.

Brady Sass got the win as he went five innings allowing eight hits and four earned runs. He struck out three and walked four.

Jon Cappotelli tossed the final two innings allowing two hits and one run with one strikeout.

The Red Raiders, who are batting .350 as a team on the season, pounded out 23 hits in the game.

For Avon, Crye went 3-4 with a double while Doug Yencer was 1-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Adam Cappello was 1-2 with two RBIs and one run while Danny Welch was 1-3 with five stolen bases for the Braves (3-14 overall).

Crye took the loss as he went one-plus inning allowing 10 runs (only four earned) on eight hits with two walks.

Brandon McCaffrey-Anderson, Zach Rizzolo and Jeff Fasoldt also saw time on the hill.

It was Cal-Mum’s third LCAA D-II title in four years.

Voter ID policy among election issues in Mount Morris

A trio of incumbents elected to the Mount Morris Central School Board three years ago — Tad Rowley, Amanda Lonsberry and Ann Hunt — are touting successful on-track reform as they face two challengers — David DiPasquale and Peter Privitera. The challengers are claiming administrative overload, lack of transparency, poor student performance, and a need for a student resource officer, and are also bemoaning a newly enacted policy for school voter identification documentation.
