Increased unemployment applications tell of slowed recovery

Some 386,000 persons submitted applications for unemployment last week, a rise of 6,000 over the previous week. The rise spurred questions regarding the strength of the recovery from the financial crisis. Economists say that the increase shows that hiring is not keeping up with pace of layoffs. Employers added an average of just under 100,000 jobs per month through the first quarter of 2012. The number represents less that half the Q4 average of 250,000 jobs per month.

Bellavia gets nod from Right-to-Life Party

Congressional candidate David Bellavia has received the nod from the NYS Right to Life Party, a development that is being trumpeted by his campaign as strong evidence of his conservative values. “I was raised as a Christian with a heartfelt belief in the sanctity of life,” Bellavia said in a statement. “I am proud to have the endorsement of our state’s Right to Life leaders and I pledge to stand tall in Congress for our shared beliefs.” Party leaders were no less sparing in their praise for Bellavia. “We sincerely appreciate David’s commitment to defend and protect unborn children, the dependent elderly and those with disabilities,” Chairman Barbara Meara said. “We believe his election to the House of Representatives will be a positive step towards cultivating a culture of Life in an increasingly hostile environment.”
