Town of Avon adopts fracking moratorium in split vote
The Town of Avon joined the ranks of the majority of Livingston County townships last Thursday, June 28, when, in a three-to-two vote, the town board adopted a hydrofracking moratorium.
The local law was carefully worded so as to not negatively impact the 19 existing gas wells which Lenape Resources operates in Avon.
The dissenting votes were cast by councilmen Bob Ayers and Dick Steen.
Town of Avon Supervisor David LeFeber commented that the moratorium was “what the people wanted — and we are here to represent them.”
To date, 13 of Livingston County’s 17 towns have adopted moratoriums banning high volume horizontal hydrofracking on a temporary basis. Moratoriums are also pending in Portage and York.
Only Ossian and Leicester have taken no action in the matter.
