Caledonia woman wins $5,000 in Tops Monopoly game
Nanette Fox of Handsome Lake Drive, Caledonia is $5,000 richer after winning Tops Friendly Markets 50th Anniversary Monopoly Collect and Win Game.
Tops Markets representatives joined Avon Tops Manager Mary Harrington in presenting Fox with her winnings on Monday, July 2.
“Today’s a vacation day. I’ve never won this much before in my life. A hundred dollars at bingo was the most I’ve ever won,” Fox said as she received the check.
On the day she shopped at Avon Tops, Fox allowed a customer to go ahead of her at the checkout line. To thank her, the customer handed over a Monopoly game sticker.
Fox took it home and handed it to her roommate’s daughter to place on the Monopoly game card while she finished getting ready for work. A minute or so later, she was told that she was a $5,000 Monopoly winner.
“I didn’t believe her. I told her I had to get ready for work. She said I’d won $5,000 and I better get to Tops,” Fox told Tops Friendly Market representatives.
Fox brought the Monopoly game card to Harrington, who smiled, told her it looked good, but added that the win had to be verified through an official process. About a week later Harrington and Fox were notified that the win was verified and official.
Fox was so excited to accept the winnings that her hands were shaking. She works at Alliance Precision Plastics in Rochester but had the day off to accept her prize. Fox plans to use the money to buy satellite radio and the rest she says she will share with family and friends. She says she plans to continue playing Tops Friendly Markets Monopoly for the remaining two weeks of the game.
“I like to play the game for the challenge of it; you never think it will happen to you. But now I will keep playing to try to win the grill for my friend,” Fox said.
The store, located at 270 East Main Street in Avon had a cake to celebrate Fox’s good fortune. She is the second major prize winner since the start of the game on April 22, company representatives said.
This is the third year of the Tops Friendly Markets Monopoly game. Customers can earn game pieces every time they check out and use their BonusPlus or BonusCard at any Tops location.
New this year in conjunction with Tops’ 50th anniversary, is the introduction of a $250,000 guaranteed cash payout. Up to 200 customers that find special golden prize markers will have a chance to win the $250,000 prize.
