Marine emergency

Pontoon boat catches fire on Conesus Lake

A pontoon boat on Conesus Lake caught fire Sunday afternoon, with its owner and two passengers safely escaping the flames.

Sheriff’s Marine Patrol and the Lakeville Fire Department Rescue Boat responded to the emergency call around 2:14 p.m. Sunday — along with several private boats. Also on scene were the New York State Park Police and the Livingston County Department of Health.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The 2003 Harris boat, owned by 60-year-old Paul Battaglia, appears to be a total loss. The boat was towed to the boat launch and removed from the lake — which posted a challenge as one pontoon has been damaged and was underwater.
