Sectional Champs

Avon football, cheerleading sweep

AVON — It was a championship moment or two for the Avon Braves as both the football and cheerleading squads captured their respective titles Saturday.

In the morning at RIT, the Avon cheerleaders captured the Class D title with 319 points, nipping runner-up Perry (315).

On Saturday afternoon at a rainy Sahlen’s Stadium the Avon football program captured their third sectional title in the past five years as they ousted previously unbeaten Red Jacket 14-6.

It was Avon’s fifth straight appearance in the sectional finals.

“Our coaching staff is very proud of this group,” said Avon coach Andy Englert. “They have worked very hard for this moment and deserve it.”

Avon (8-1) entered the game as the No. 2 seed, despite being ranked No. 3 in the state.

Avon’s two TD’s both came in the third quarter as TJ Crye ran in from five yards out and Jake Martinez scored from seven yards away.

Avon led 14-0 until Red Jacket scored late in the fourth.

Red Jacket (8-1) from the Finger Lakes played a much softer schedule than Avon and it showed Saturday as Avon’s defense limited the Indians to minimal yardage.

Jack Eichorn was named MVP of the game for his outstanding play on both sides of the interior line.

Avon’s Jake Martinez was named top offensive back of the game as he finished with 19 carries for 87 yards and also made two catches for 42 yards.

Danny Welch led Avon’s defense with 17 tackles.

Avon will take on Class D champ Notre Dame next Saturday.

Avon’s John “Big Game’ Ambroselli cuts up field in the third quarter of the Braves’ 14-6 win over Red Jacket in the Class DD championship at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester.
