Rountree retires at county economic development office
Pat Rountree, Executive Director of the Livingston County Economic Development Office, its Industrial Development Agency and Development Corporation, retired effective Dec. 31.
Rountree was hired by the Livingston County Board of Supervisors in 1988 to start an economic development function within the county and to run its IDA. His 35 years of experience included prior development work in Erie and Orleans counties.
The Livingston County Board of Supervisors appointed Julie Marshall as the new Executive Director on Dec. 19. Marshall has served as Deputy Director to Rountree for 12 years.
Rountree is credited for accomplishing several significant projects over his 24-year tenure with the county. Among his successes was saving salt mining in Livingston County after the collapse of the former Akzo Nobel mine in 1993.
Today American Rock Salt operates the largest salt mine in the western hemisphere and employs up to 350 people during peak production. He also assisted in the redevelopment of the former Foster Wheeler complex in Dansville. Several companies operate at the Dansville plant employing hundreds of people.
The attraction of Barilla to Avon is also attributed to Rountree’s leadership. Barilla’s 300,000 square foot plant and warehouse opened in 2007 and today employs 200. Also during Rountree’s tenure, Kraft’s Livingston County plant become the company’s sole manufacturing plant for Cool Whip along with the attraction of several production lines for Oscar Mayer Lunchables. The 56-acre plant employees more than 400 people.
The Livingston County Microenterprise Assistance program, Downtown Revitalization Villages program, Small Business Loan Fund and Business/Education Alliance were started through his office.
Rountree has served on the Board’s of the New York State Economic Development Council, Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council, Greater Rochester Enterprise, GLOW Workforce Investment Board, WIRED Initiative, Finger Lakes Manufacturing Council, the Livingston County Area Chamber of Commerce and the County’s Business Education Alliance.
He has also been active in the United Way of Livingston County, the Iroquois Trail Council of the Boys Scouts of America and the Knights of Columbus.
Rountree and his wife Susan live in Caledonia.
