Section V Champions

Big rally gives Mount Morris girls first ever sectional title

GAINSEVILLE — This one was anything but pretty.

But to Mount Morris it was a thing of beauty!

The No. 2 seeded Lady Blue Devils (16-5) scratched and clawed their way to the program’s first Section V title as they nipped top-seeded and two-time defending champ Whitesville (18-2) 30-28 in the Class D2 title game Friday at Letchworth High School.

Grace D’Angelo’s steal and lay-up was the only points scored in the extra session.

Mount Morris trailed most of the second half and by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter.

Anna Brado hit a pair of 3-pointers, including the game-tying trifecta with 29 seconds left to tie the game at 28-28.

Mount Morris outscored Whitesville 8-1 in the fourth period. They held the Lady Blue Jays to one point over the final 12 minutes.

The junior D’Angelo had a double-double for Mount Morris with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Justine Yates grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for Mount Morris, who will play Batavia Notre Dame Monday in a Class D state qualifier.
