LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Boy Scouts need to remember founding principles

Gentlemen:

I am pleading with the leadership of the Boy Scouts of America to stand firm to the principles, morals and traditions that has made America’s boys men of high moral character and the United States of America the foremost leading nation in the world.

Please, I am begging you, don’t compromise the moral character of the BSA and of this nation any further than it is now, especially and simply to be politically correct because of a few morally misguided individuals.

Let us remind ourselves of the three principles of the Scout Oath:

On my honor I will do my best:

1. To do my duty to God and country and to obey the scout law.

2. To help other people at all times.

3. To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

When we took this oath we did so in the sight of God and called on Him and our peers to be witness to our pledge.

When did it become permissible to be a hypocrite? What would this compromise say to our Scouts, who are surrounded by immoral, misguided people? We may be the last bastion of moral hope. Does this compromise mean we will have to remove “morally straight” from our oath? What is next? Removal from the scout law the words reverent or perhaps clean or trustworthy? Once the door is open corruption flows in like a flood. Remember what happened when God was taken out of our schools.

Remember the Scout Motto: Be Prepared.

In a state of readiness, having thought out beforehand any situation that may occur so that we might be prepared to know and do the right thing at the moment.

That is exactly what we must be, prepared to resist and fight to protect every word of the Boy Scouts of America oath and law. We have the Supreme Court of the United States of America on our side. Cherish it, do not give it up.

I would rather choose to dismantle the organization and go out in glory, than to have its ancient foundations, the Scout Oath, Law, Motto and Slogan debased, degraded, disgraced and decayed in the putrid rot and stink of immoral embarrassment

Yes, that decay would be a slow death and a tremendous embarrassment and let down to all of its past and present members. Yes, a let down to all who grew up living, practicing and cherishing the principles and directives of its devout, sacred moral code.

I pray to God that you will follow the very same oath, law, motto and slogan that have made the Boy Scouts of America the greatest man making organization in the world. Yes! Leaders of choice character!

Your fight is the last stand before the total destruction of a morally great nation. The last bastion of moral hope for young men! God help us to be morally straight!

God Bless the Boy Scouts of America.

Sincerely,

DAVID L. AUGUSTYN
