Canaseraga teen killed, another seriously injured, in Ossian accident
A 16-year-old from Canaseraga was killed and another seriously injured early Sunday morning in a motor vehicle accident in Ossian.
Connor Gilbert, 16, was a passenger in a truck operated by Nathan Poddany, 18, of Canaseraga, Allegany County, that was traveling south on White Road when the driver lost control and went of the east shoulder of the road. The truck struck several trees before overturning and coming to a rest on the passenger side, according to a report from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, but was not discovered until about 8 a.m. because the vehicle was covered by trees that sheered off as a result of the collision. A driver traveling northbound saw the downed tress and investigated before calling 911, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Gilbert was pronounced dead at the scene by Livingston County Coronor Rob Waltman.
Poddany was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, by a Lifenet Helicopter. His injuries were serious, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The accident remains under investigation.
Investigating at the scene was Sheriff’s Investigator Tom Doughtery, Major Matt Burgess, Major Chris Smith, Sgt. Norm Zeh, Sgt. Chad Draper, Deputy Chad Vanauken and Deputy Kane.
Canaseraga Fire and EMS also responded and used the Jaws of Life to extricate both occupants of the vehicle.
Livingston County EMS also provided medical support.
