The usual tranquility of Geneseo’s Prospect Street was disturbed on September 2, 1943, by of all things a parade ending at No. 27.

World War II Pacific war hero, Major Robert B. Fraser, arrived home on a 30 day leave after commanding the U.S. Marine Corps “Wolf Pack” fighter squadron in action above the Solomon Islands. Following his leave, Robert never would return to his boyhood home.

In less that 10 months the Wolf Pack destroyed 88 Japanese aircraft, enough reason for a hometown parade, one led by the Livonia High School Band. Members of the New York State National Guard Troop I marched behind the band. They were inspected on the Frasers’ lawn. Several hundred admirers filled the lawn at Prospect Street.

Major Fraser’s squadron came near the record for downing Japanese Zeros. He was more interested in telling a remarkable personal story to the homefolks.

In one engagement on Feb. 1, 1943, the major bagged three enemy fighters but that was not his favorite “war story.”

“Fearless Fraser’s” pre-war employment with American Airlines served him well as did his athleticism as a former University of Pennsylvania varsity crew team member. Brother “Bro” and his sister looked up to Bob.

The South Pacific zone became a warrior’s Valhalla in mid 1942 and into 1943. From June 3 to 6, 1942 aircraft carriers, submarines and surface warships of varied types took part in a tremendous battle near small Midway Island. On Aug. 7, 1942, U.S. forces landed on the Solomon Islands, the first major American land offensive, turning the Japanese to a retreat that ended in their unconditional surrender.

Fraser and Wolf Pack played a key role in the battle. His personal tale was humbly told, filled with thanksgiving. He was a pilot who fell 18,000 feet during the battle and lived.

The Major termed it a “miraculous escape from death or serious injury.” His Corsair F4U was disabled by a Zero in the Southwest Pacific skies. In a letter home Robert joked to mom and dad, Mr. and Mrs. James W. Fraser, that “I earned my flight pay that day.”

On his fateful day, Fraser took part in a dogfight. He shot down two Japanese planes and was credited with three “smokers” probables without official determination of their fate.

Then he went down. In his words — “most uncomfortable to say the least.” (his letter) Tailing a Zero which he “got,” the Major switched to tailing another fighter. Recovering from a spin, a third Zero appeared above and then behind, before reorienting himself, Fraser’s oil line was hit. The engine froze.

“I knew a forced landing in the water awaited. Then the pesky Zero followed me down, all 18,000 feet to near the surface.” The Japanese Zero was shooting all the way with bullets bouncing off the Corsair’s armor plates.

At 500 feet Fraser and the Pacific faced each other. The Zero ran out of bullets before a final strafing of our hero. He hadn’t dared to parachute, realizing certain death awaited from enemy bullets. Pancaking about 100 yards offshore from (censured island) he began climbing from the cockpit when the plane’s hood slammed shut between his back on the outside and the remaining interior parachute straps.

Major Fraser hung outside the sinking plane, suspended by parachute straps with the remaining straps still inside the plane.

The plane slowly began its final settling. At 4 feet below the surface his parachute straps relaxed and extended. Fraser was able to free himself. After 4 hours in the water, a patrol boat picked him up. Major Fraser later was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He soon was known throughout the war as “Fearless Fraser.”

He survived thanks to a miracle and skill. The Marine Corps recognized his skills so no return to the Pacific war zones but promotion to a Group Commander training new flyers who would operate from aircraft carriers, one of the first Marine Corps groups to do so.

June 18, 1944, dawned with heavy fog off the shore of Santa Barbara, Calif. The Major was coaching three flyers and playing the part of the enemy. His Grumen Hellcat disappeared in the fog 6 miles off the coast. Trainees thought: “How clever.”

But Major Fraser never reappeared. A night search found only an oil slick and a few bits of metal. The search ended two days later. His remains were never found.

Literacy Volunteers of Livingston County Inc. might be “the best-kept secret in the County”, in the words of Tony D’Imperio.

As president Dianne Krenzer reminded the Supervisors on Jan. 23, volunteers have a dual mission of teaching adult literacy free-of-charge and instructing speakers of a primary second language. LVA has been around since 1977. Geneseo’s Kay Fosegan reminds readers that LVA was in its infancy when Robert Lynch was a student at SUNY Geneseo. Over the years Bob was guided by the experiences of Migrant Center founder Dr. Gloria Mattera. Later Sue Bonnell became certified as a dedicated ESOL teacher. LCVA and Bob Lynch have never truly separated. This nonprofit has earned honoring by the County Supervisors who declared January 2013 as “LVA of Livingston County Month.”

The Good Neighbor’s Committee counted 48 young people and 20 adults at the Dec. 28 post-holiday bowling event, Livingston Lanes. The bus driver and management at the Lanes did a fine job assisting. Salvation Army pizza, hot from Wegmans ovens and fruit were a great attraction. Among many volunteers, “Amy” made herself useful.

Harold R. Rossborough Jr. died Jan. 13 at age 89. The Rossborough family goes back generations in the Geneseo area. Harold was a talented gentleman who will be missed.

Reported

Margaret McCaughey had a fall at home and was taken to Strong Hospital. She next rehabilitated at the Mount Morris Nursing Facility before returning home.

From the United Methodist Church “Messenger” — the Parish Outreach Center will be welcoming clients on Jan. 31; Feb. 7, 14, 21; March 7, 14. Specific hours can be obtained from POC at the Church.

It’s been some time since author Aaron Paul Lazar e-mailed “Around Geneseo.” His latest subject is free audio books limited to the first 35 listeners. Titles available are “Double Forte”, “Tremblo”, “Cry of the Loon”, “Mazurka”, “Firesong”, “Healey’s Cave”, “Terror Comes Knocking” and “For Keeps.”

Rotary Cog Grindings

January was Rotary Awareness Month. District clubs donated more than $32,000 to three Storm Sandy disaster relief funds. Geneseo Interact student Gurmania Chawla was pictured at the College Holiday Jubilee (from the Grapevine) the annual community pasta dinner will be Feb. 12 at the Central School, tickets from any member. Randy Gilbert reported working on another deer-related book. Rotary’s Theme Float in the Tournament of Roses Parade was “All the Places We Go.” John Lanpher summarized the latest Foundation Grant regulations. Past-President John also won the drawing but not the big prize.

Columnist Chatter

A huge limb partially blocked Crossett Road at South Street after our latest Big Blow. It quickly was cleared away. However South Street at Crossett Road remains a location awaiting a disaster. A traffic light anyone?

Kudos to recent Motor Corps drivers including Catherine Robin, Charlotte Brummett and Peggy Linton.

More kudos to Ethan Fletcher for his Digital Media second place festival award, also a third place award to Brittany Johnson for her project, “House.”

And from the Geneseo Central bulletin board- the words of the month were reverberate, ruminate and queue.

It was reported Gene Scherline returned to the stage as Sheila at the Geneseo Community Players Winter Show that was held from Jan. 17-19.

“Around Geneseo” greets Victoria Holland, the new director at Aprile Meadows complex.

As the 150th anniversary of the Civil War continues, an e-mail from Genesee Community College announcing a three day encampment at the Medina Campus Center in May with details forthcoming.

Congratulations to Mallory Crane on the success of her Girl Scout Temple Hill Cemetery holiday wreath project. A number of orders came from “Around Geneseo” readers. Mallory qualified for the Gold Award. Thanks for the nice note Mallory.

36 Years Ago in Geneseo (1977), concluded) – A school bus was hit by “gun-play” on Main Street. Ten local clergy came together for a 12th night worship service. Janet Lindsay directed the combined chorus.

The Portageville Bridge project hearing attracted a packed house to the Mount Morris Genesee River Reception Center on Jan. 9. A number of Geneseoans attended. A DEIS report considered both immediate and long-term impacts. Two surviving alternatives remained. Construction would begin this summer and continue for more than three years. Original alternatives were reviewed including a favored new railroad bridge 75 feet south of the present railroad crossing. The felling of three acres of trees would be followed by reforestation.

Shortly after Storm Sandy hit, SUNY Geneseo college student Jessica Shatzet volunteered for Red Cross disaster relief operations. In late November Jessica took two disaster training classes, then applied for storm relief duty. She is using her semester break weeks, to return only two days before SUNY Geneseo classes resume. Livingston Help’s students also were reported as volunteers. Bravo to these community minded students.

The Literacy Volunteers of America, Livingston Chapter at their January Board meeting were reminded that the County Board of Supervisors declared January as Literacy Volunteer’s Month. President Dianne Krenzer will address the County Supervisors at their second January meeting.

Board member Kay Fosegan is progressing well following surgery. Stimulate your vocabulary at the March 3 Scrabble Scramble evening at the Conesus Golf Course Club.

Rotary Cog Grindings- President-elect Dennis Dawson presided during the year’s first meeting where Salvation Army regional coordinator Rod Ballingee was a guest. Rod and D. W. Parish thanked members and our community for over $7,500 in donations at Walmart, donations that will stay “right here” to help with emergency food, housing and utility needs. The Kiwanis Club helped collect an impressive amount. Under the direction of Bonnie Swanson, the Key Bank of Geneseo staff did daily counting. Geneseo Central School high school students were invaluable. At the following meeting President Tim Brinduse was presented a moose whistle from Art Hatton. Mr. and Mrs. Hatton spent a month in Alaska. Tim tested the whistle but attracted not even a deer. Tim Hayes paid a fine honoring the success of GCS athletic teams and the Avon cheerleaders.

A personal twitter- thanks to Helen Stefano and Bob Henry for their appreciation of “Around Geneseo.” A sad note brought news of the death of Dave Hopwood. For the first time in 58 years, there had been no Christmas card from Dave. A talented guitarist, he entertained patients at the Albany Veteran’s Hospital until almost his last day. Postcarding from Berlin to Geneseo, from Tosi who lived in Pittsburgh for 13 months and from Yvonne, a nurse.

From around town, it was reported Crissie Carr is recovering from a broken ankle, Editor Mark Gillespie — thank you for the kind words regarding my recent column of tribute. Hopeful “585” will follow in the footsteps of Genesee Country, the Magazine of the Western Door”, once so successful throughout Western, New York. Thanks to Peter Palermo for eight years on the Zoning Board of Appeals.

And along Main Street — the Livingston County Democrat Party said thanks to supporters as they moved from their 116 Main Street office. Shiloh Fair Trade Novelties is doing business at 120 Main Street. Posted in his front window, Dick Peraino details his reasons for closing his shop after 50 years of family barbering. Reluctantly Dick prepares to leave with a parting message, “Save It.” A second personal twitter- some senior citizen “guys” have depended on the Family Shop.

Happy birthdays to: Dick Gallivan, Jan. 29; Sally Heitzman, 13; Margie Wallin, 20, and Susan Crilly 21.

Kudos to Grades K-3 Digital Media Festival awards Jake Scoville, Ava Scoville and Jasmine Rozalski for their Cinderella video creation.

36 Years Ago in Geneseo (1977, continued) — Ted Bondi resigned as a director of the Youth Recreation Board after 18 years of service. Theo Greenman left the Planning Board. Brian Vasey was presented as a Boy Scout award. “The Democrats favored a five member Town Board.” (Republican newspaper).

The High School Honor Society holiday breakfast included senior citizens as their guests; a fun filled event beginning with escorts at the door to a delectable menu to holiday songs by their chorus. Doug Johnson joined in caroling with enthusiasm.

Superintendent Tim Hayes greeted each guest. Students were thanked for their Salvation Army kettle volunteerism. A donation in their honor will be made to the Hillside Youth Court as a memorial to the Sandy Hook students and teachers.

Chatter talk ‘round the table’ included mention of 90 student violinists from varied grade levels, quite an impressive number of musicians from a student enrollment as found in Geneseo.

Bulletin boards were awash with creativity. Mr. Z’s penguins were admires with artistic penguins by Jack, Jennie, Ryley, Luke, Rachael and Amanda to name a few. Ryley’s penguin was a unique yellow color. Mrs. Haight’s kindergartners theme was “If I Where a Snowman at Night.” Brown Bear Boulevard was an interesting local theme.

Around town

Our village mourned the death of Thomas Melizzi died on Dec. 11. His Dec. 15 funeral took place with full military honors. He also is survived by wife Marge Pecora Melizzi and three daughters.

Donald N. MacLane died on Dec. 7. For many years Don took an active part in Geneseo life, particularly helping inmates at the County Jail.

Mayor Richard Hatheway and wife Linda hosted a lovely holiday reception at their home on Dec. 16. Village and Town personnel were among the guests properly served by Hatheway grandchildren.

Bob Wilcox told interesting stories about one-time publisher Don Sanders. Don once featured a suggestive headline about a crime on campus. Readers were to turn to page 14. They found the crime concerned the Arizona State Campus and not the Normal School.

Rotary Cog Grindings

Club history was made on Dec. 17 with two meetings in one day, one at noon and the second in the early evening. The Rotary International convention is scheduled from June 23-26, 2013 in Libson, Portugal.

Rotaract students helped at St. Mary’s parish center’s Harvest Dinner-Devin Gray, Ben Nagasng, Rachel Bardun, and Molly Chawla.

GCS Superintendent Tim Hayes reviewed the many security details at the school, those corresponding to requirements by the State Education Department. He assured our students are very safe in their classrooms. Various mental health services are always available.

Dianne Acomb sent a brochure to “Around Geneseo” telling of the Dress A Girl Around the World project. It is sponsored by Angels of Mercy Inc., 692 North Winton Rd., Rochester, 14609.

There are over 1,600 Angels sewing dresses for young girls in Third-World countries. Pillowcases are used as a starting point for dresses that become more decorative with additional fabric, year and the use of bias tape.

A second mailing arrived from Linda Hinkley whose husband, the popular Duncan Hinkley from the college passed away in June. Duncan influenced many young lives and still remains a cherished memory. Placing an electronic scoreboard at the college swimming pool as a memorial is a goal. Linda hopes that donations will be made to raise $70,000, making the project a reality.

More kudos to other Salvation Army kettle bell ringers including Randy Gilbert, Tim Cornell, (many volunteer hours), Tim Brinduse, Tim Hayes, Dick Gallivan, John Lanpher, Deloris Johnson, Kurt Fletcher, and Carol Carey. Richard Platt was a loyal collector of donations. Some GCS students were Alex Whitmore, Ben Kelly, Abby Standera, Trevore Mothersell, Melita Kingston, Winyuan Chang, Blanca Mannix and Felicity Thomas.

Other notes

Sally and Dick Gallivan will celebrate a wedding anniversary on Jan. 31. The Gallivans recently attended a holiday fundraising event in Buffalo involving their son, State Senator Patrick Gallivan. Darcy and pat Lynch celebrated their wedding anniversary on Jan. 17.

Nancy Buckley reported that she hopes to complete work for her Doctorate within a year and a half. It was rumored that the SeaCow Grill (seafood and steak restaurant) is planning to open at the former Starbucks on Lakeville Road. Marian Hawkins had kind words about reading “Around Geneseo” as did Helen Stefano.

For your calendar; the Jan. 3 Ecumenical Book Review at Wadsworth Library will be “Almost President: The Men Who Lost the Race but Changed the Nation” reviewed by Dr. Susan Bailey. The review begins at noon.

40 years ago in Geneseo

It was the biggest fire! The Rabinowitz Block with three large stores bordering Main Street went up in smoke.

The loss was over a half a million dollars. Lyle Richardson, Bob Hazeltine and Charles Perry captured history with their photographs.

The McDonald clothing store was a loss. Lowell Conrad opened his store so firefighters could get warm.

Forty years and still serving. The Livingston County Coalition of Churches began in 1972. The 2012 LCCC annual dinner at the East Avon Presbyterian Church looked back at history but mostly celebrated the present and the future.

One new program brings visitors at the County Nursing and Rehabilitation facility is directed by Lauri McEvoy. Volunteers told of bringing joy to residents.

Tim McMahon and the Reverend Neil Frood were M.C.’s with Geneseoans Lucille Kane, Rev. Paul Metzger and Mr. McMahon attending.

Around Towm

The members of the Monday Evening Class met on Nov. 5 to listen to Anne Bishop, retired Executive Manager at Xerox.

She spoke about some of the problems of working in a previous male-dominated environment and the strides that have been made, especially at Xerox.

There are still barriers difficult to cross as women seek equity in the workforce according to Bishop. The Club welcomed Dorothy Welch and Barbara Anderson as new members as reported by Catherine Robin.

TRIAD Alert

Those answering “urgent” classified ads should be wary. Several persons responded to such ads by phone and provided personal information. Eventually scam artists send a package containing U.S. postal money orders as their payment.

The victim is instructed to deposit their pay via Western Union to a specified address. The money orders are counterfeit and the real money, sent by Western Union, is untraceable.

Community and College

Jane Hogan spoke of her Peace Corps experiences before the Geneseo Torch Club. The first Dr. William Gohlman Lecture centered on Moslems serving in the French and German armies during World War I. Dr. Gohlman was fondly remembered by the presenter. James and Arlene Somerville were feted at a reception honoring their recently scholarship fund donation to aid History majors at SUNY, Geneseo.

Historically speaking

Ten additional copies of “Ellen’s Kitchen, Geneseo 1850-1900” are being prepared.

Relating the story of Ellen North and the Geneseo Jam Kitchen, it sold out as a popular title; orders at $15 a copy can be placed at the village building or town office.

KUDOS to a dedicated “Livingston News” reader. Busy Mark safeguards back issues to read during time-off. On such a recent day he sat back to read seven past issues word-for-word.

Rotary Cog Grindings

Plans have been made for the December 10 Holiday Dinner according to Bruce Godsave. The Veteran’s Luncheon again was well-attended with each veteran telling the branch of service and where assigned.

An unabashed gentleman admitted his only combat was a married person. Father Eric Thompson described his Army chaplain duties in Iraq.

It was a challenge ministering to varied faith beliefs and personal problems. Emerson Johnsen was honored for his 90th birthday while Margaret Johnson served as greeter for veteran guests.

The Geneseo Young at Hearty senior citizen club hosted a possible record Thanksgiving attendance at the Geneseo UMC on Nov. 5. Catherine Robin offered a traditional prayer of thanksgiving. An outstanding musical program featured Howard Appell from the “News” with “friends.” There were various stringed instruments. Their musical theme mainly was on railroad songs from the past. Thanks again to Crissie Carr for the program information.

Marjorie Harding, her granddaughter and several other Geneseo women sat back at the College Union where students lined up to pet a dog’s head as a reminder of home. The dogs were well-behaved.

Kudos to Sally Moses who forwarded photos of the Wadsworth stone wall from past years to researchers as a request mentioned in “Around Geneseo.”

Dr. John Manzella painted an objective portrait of America’s employment problems and our economy the day following the election. Twenty-one million jobs will be needed over the next decade because of retirements and discouraged workers.

He encouraged the U.S. to join more fair trade agreements and strongly encouraged healthy U.S. Chinese trade as part of the global economy, trade that benefits both nations in many ways.

A personal opinion

A tent with taste, that’s the Amish Eicher’s family sale on Saturdays at the Geneseo Plaza. Homemade bakedgoods, fresh vegetables and fruit are great.

Geneseo persons attending the Red Cross Clara Barton Club reception at the Rochester Brewery House included Tim Hayes, D.A. Parish, and Janet Craft. It was nice to visit with former village residents Dolly and Bruce Klee, soon leaving for a month-long cruise through the South Pacific.
