Village of Mount Morris trustee Bruce Lomnicki died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 11.
Lomnicki was an Amsterdam, N.Y. native who had been a Mt. Morris resident for 32 years.
A 1968 SUNY Geneseo graduate, Lomnicki had a long career as a Special Education teacher with Mt. Morris May Center BOCES, retiring as interim principal in 2003.
He was Mt. Morris Village Recreation Director from 1978-83, then served eight years as a village justice through the early 1990s.
As a first time candidate for Village of Mount Morris trustee in March 2007, Lomnicki lead all contenders with 348 votes.
In his capacity as village trustee Lomnicki was also serving as deputy mayor and as liaison to the court and fire department.
Lomnicki had attended a Wednesday evening meeting of trustees prior to his death. Fellow Trustee Bob Lonsberry has commended Lomnicki in his weekday Web column.
Lonsberry writes:
For a moment I was grateful that I had shared his company on the last night of his life. Then I was sad that he we had taken him from his family on the last night of his life. I thought about the frailty of life, and how temporary we are, and how a good man was gone.
I didn’t know Bruce Lomnicki well, but I knew him well enough to admire him, respect him, trust him and look up to him.
And I know how he spent the last hours of his life.
He spent them in the service of his neighbors, defending their interests, looking out for their needs, strengthening his community and standing up for principle.
His last night was like the rest of his life – honorable, kind, caring and cheerful. I was a witness to that. I will never forget that.
And I will never cease to be inspired by it.
