Perry architecture firm wins two awards

In. Site: Architecture (I.S:A), received two out of a total of nine American Institute of Architects-Rochester Design Awards for 2009.

Their Highland FLIPhouse, in Geneseo, received a Recognition for Exploration design from the Columbus, OH-based jury. The addition and renovation “flip” the village home around, opening living space up in three dimensions towards the rear of the site. The sustainable design – which includes a planted roof, bio-based spray insulation, radiant concrete flooring, LED lighting and heat-recovery ventilation – all contribute to a 50% carbon footprint reduction in annual energy use.

I.S:A also received a Merit Award for their Irondequoit Bay TREEhouse. The artist and writer clients mandated a “treehouse on a cliff.” The 1500 square foot home goes vertical, keeping living space open and infused with southern light, while knitting space at each of four levels to the outdoors via balconies and patios. The sculptor gets a “lair” at walkout level while the writer’s “nest” is perched at the top. A rooftop terrace provides a modest square of sunlight for growing roses on an otherwise densely shaded property.

Both projects can be viewed on the firm’s website.

I.S:A has garnered four Design Awards in the past two years. Partners Rick Hauser and Ali Yapicioglu’s practice includes sustainable, innovative design at scales from kitchens and renovations, through new single- and multi-family residences, to civic, commercial and institutional work.
