SUNY Geneseo provides pesticide information

Activist Judy Braiman of Rochesterians Against the Misuse of Pesticides reports that SUNY Geneseo has fulfilled her request for a listing of all active chemical ingredients in all pesticides seeing use on the campus grounds.

Initially, college officials had provided Braiman with the names of 14 brands of pesticides in use. Braiman advised that she wanted the specific chemical components, since brand names are not definitive of chemical content and in fact often have their chemical content modified.

Braiman commended SUNY Geneseo Environmental Safety & Health Officer Charles Reyes for cooperatively providing the requested information in timely fashion. She also commended the college for discontinuing use of a common insect spray containing a component possibly linked to the collapse of honey bee colonies.

Braiman is now in the process of reviewing each of the chemicals to determine which might be posing health risks to exposed persons on campus, using DEC, EPA and other published standards.
