Q&A: Dansville football coach expects best year yet

Six questions for Dansville head football coach Mike McMullin.

1) What type of expectations do you have for this year’s team?

Our expectations are the same every year — to be competitive and play to the best of our ability. We are trying to help young men develop and learn lessons that will last a lifetime. If I said our only goal is to win a championship, I would be selling short the idea of what high school athletics is all about.

2) Who are some key losses from last year’s team and how can you overcome those losses?

Matt Schuster will be a key loss. He accounted for over 1,200 yards last season and was our leading scorer. We will be counting on other players to fill the void.

3) Did your team put in a good off-season of workouts, and or lifting, and how many kids would you say were hitting the weights each week?

Our team had a great off-season of lifting and conditioning. This is by far the most dedicated group we have ever had at Dansville. We had every varsity player in the weightroom each day.

4) What players will you be counting on for your program to play at a high level?

Our offensive line and defensive line will be counted on heavily for us to be successful. It all starts up front with our linemen Dan Conway, Noah Bowdey, Cody Sponholz, Nick DeBerardinis, Andy Kershner, Doug Gridley, Aidan Rollman, Brian Lawrence, Joe Newcomb, and Bryan Wood. For Garrett Hoag to have another good year, the guys up front must play well.

5) What teams will you be keeping a close eye on come sectional time?

In Class C — Le Roy, Le Roy, and Le Roy. They are kings of the mountain until somebody knocks them off. I think Letchworth will challenge and Wellsville will be much improved.

6) What will be the keys to your upcoming season?

We need to stay healthy and play better defense. We simply need to be better defensively.
