Sheriff’s vehicle in 3-way collision in Lima

A Livingston County Sheriff’s patrol vehicle was involved in a serious accident with two other vehicles last Friday morning, Aug. 28, in Lima, at the intersection of Route 15A, Corby and Heath Markham roads.

According to Sheriff John York, Deputy Menzo Peck was responding to a domestic violence call when the accident took place. With his warning lights flashing and siren sounding, the deputy had pulled up to the intersection, facing east on Heath Markham Road. Deputy Peck saw a northbound vehicle on Route 15A pulling off to the right, to make way for his emergency vehicle. The deputy then proceeded into the intersection. At that moment Deputy Peck’s vehicle was struck on the front, left side by a 2004 Ford pickup truck driven by Michael Payne, headed southbound on Route 15A.

After hitting the Sheriff’s vehicle the pickup swerved and struck the 2007 Subaru which was pulling to the side of the road to make room for the Sheriff’s vehicle. After the second impact, the pickup drove out into a field.

The driver of the Subaru, Loraine Schneider, was transported to Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua with non-life threatening injuries, and released later in the afternoon. The pickup had two passengers, Patrick Grove and Patrick Grove, Jr., who reportedly did not sustain serious injury. Nor was Deputy Peck injured.

All three vehicles sustained substantial damage. Sheriff York reports that the patrol vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe, was totaled.

As of Monday afternoon no citations had been issued. An investigation of the accident by the Sheriff’s department remained underway.
