Letter: SUNY Geneseo students returned my checkbook

SUNY Geneseo has taken a few hits on the chin recently with the reports in the newspaper of students being arrested for underage drinking. And the death of a student this past year due to alcohol poisoning is also very tragic. I am sure that the few students that were involved in the transgressions were certainly not looking to have their deeds and names reported in the news media.

However, I would like to point out a positive incident that occurred recently involving SUNY students who also weren’t looking to have their names publicized.

Just yesterday, I was having my car undergo some repairs at a business on Lakeville Road. Since my wait was estimated to be about an hour I decided to walk down to the post office and pick up the mail. I had some personal belongings with me including a checkbook.

In the process of walking down South Street and back I dropped my checkbook. I was unaware of this until I reached my home later. When I discovered my carelessness I was about to drive back to South Street and retrace my steps. It was then that I received a call from the Geneseo Police Department. The officer calling indicated that my checkbook was found by some joggers. I made arrangements to meet the officer.

Upon receipt of my checkbook I asked him for the name of the person who turned it in so that I could thank him or her personally. He said that they wanted to remain anonymous. When I pressed him for more information he did say that they were college students from the track team who were running down the sidewalk at the time.

So I would like to thank those student-athletes not only for their integrity but also for representing their college well. I believe there are more students like these at SUNY Geneseo than the ones who get the negative headlines.

Thank you Lou for taking the time to acknowledge their good deed, as you said so often people only focus on the negative, we do have good students and I am especially proud our our student-athletes.
