Letter: Tenalio bids farewell to the Geneseo Town Board

Submitted by Michael Tenalio, Geneseo Town Councilor

GENESEO, NY — I would like to say “thank you” to the Geneseo community for allowing me to serve as your Town Councilman for the past (nearly) 10 years. The privilege to be elected and re-elected has been a great honor to me. The decision to not seek re-election to a fourth term was a difficult one for me.

There is no question that I will definitely miss representing you and being an integral part of all that comes with local government. However the demands of my new company and associated global economic challenges require me to focus my time and attention on my business, which also happens to be directly linked to the ongoing national health care debate.

I have committed to Supervisor Will Wadsworth and Councilmen Dave Dwyer and Hop Manapol to work with them in any way they request in the future. They have earned my respect and confidence and I know they will continue to do a fine job. My confidence and respect is equally as high for those who manage the day-to-day offices and departments — Codes (Ron Maxwell, Dean O’Keefe, Sarah Neal), Assessor (Carol LaVigne, June Little), Town Clerk (Jean Bennett), Courts (Clerk Dulmage and all town and village judges), Public Works (Larry Levey, Fred Yates, Sam Young, Don Rice, Jeremy Secor, Mike Giellen, Alan Flickner and Terri Hopper), and Office Support (Linda LeMoyne). Our town attorney Jim Coniglio is recognized throughout New York as one of the best and I agree.

Thanks, also goes out to the exceptional and dedicated people who serve on our town planning and zoning boards and to those who hold or have held positions with the town and village over the past several years that I have not mentioned. All these fine people have made the job of representing you much easier.

A special “thank you” also goes to my family and in particular my wife Debbie (the Bus Driver) for supporting and advising me through the election campaigns and the multitude of town related issues and decisions.

Throughout my tenure on the Town Board I have worked hard, on your behalf, to be a vocal proponent of low taxes, fiscal restraint, a small-efficient-technically proficient government, public safety and health, reasonable and contained growth, inter-municipal cooperation, environmental responsibility and equitable personnel practices and policies. We have made great strides in these areas but more work has yet to be done.

As the town election approaches I urge you to get out and vote and to cast your vote for Rick Taylor and Roberta Irwin for the two seats on the Town Board and to cast your vote for Gerry Smith for Town Justice. They have demonstrated the desire, and have made the commitment, to listen to you and work on your behalf. They have the business and professional skills needed to handle the multitude of tasks they will be faced with.

They are experts in their own areas and can bring what is needed on the town board. I am convinced they can contribute immediately. Among other qualities Gerry has the legal skills necessary to sit on the judicial bench and adjudicate with credibility and integrity; Roberta has the managerial and educational skills to provide immediate contribution to keeping our town taxes low; and Rick has the technical expertise needed to address all the environmental challenges that we face along with the schedule flexibility to work on town issues when they occur.

They will all listen, they all have the right temperament for the job and they will be true professionals on the town board.
Please provide them the same support you rewarded me with this past (nearly) decade.

Thank you again for the great honor to represent you.
