CASTILE — Caledonia-Mumford and Letchworth know all about each other on the soccer field.

In what would be their third boys’ soccer game against one another in the last 16 days, No. 10 Cal-Mum (9-6-2) got the 4-3 shoot-out victory over No. 7 Letchworth (10-7-0) in Class CC first round action Monday.

The teams had split the prior match-ups with Cal-Mum winning 1-0 in Letchworth Oct. 10, and Letchworth winning 1-0 in Cal-Mum Oct. 22.

The game was tied 2-2 after 80 minutes of regulation, followed by two, 15 minute sudden victory overtime periods.

Letchworth opened the scoring 20 minutes into the first half on a shot from the left side by CJ Lathrop.

After Cal-Mum’s Pat Callanan was taken down in the box on a breakaway, the Red Raiders tied the game with 14 minutes remaining on the resulting penalty kick scored by senior midfielder Jake Landowski.

Letchworth responded just seven minutes later with Lathrop’s second goal of the game — a 15-yard blast to the right side of the net.

Cal-Mum would tie the game with 3:40 remaining in regulation, when junior Branden Cole sent a perfect cross from the left side on to the head of senior forward Josh Liming who finished the ball into the back of the net.

In the OT, Cal-Mum controlled most of the play as they generated six shots on goal including a blast from 30 yards out with five minutes remaining by Liming that was deflected over the crossbar by Letchworth keeper Nick Nenno.

Cal-Mum senior keeper Rob Lysko made two big saves on shots headed towards the back of the net to earn the victory in the shoot-out 4-3.

“Both teams battled hard and played a great game tonight,” said Cal-Mum coach Brian McQuillan.

“Our kids never stopped when we got down 1-0 and then again 2-1. And our keeper, Rob Lysko, made some great saves in the shoot-out.”

Cal-Mum will visit No. 2 seeded Byron Bergen Thursday at 6 p.m.
