Submitted by Pam Shutt, Mary Jemison Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution
As a member of the Mary Jemison Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, I would like to raise awareness of National American Indian Heritage Month.
Native American Awareness Week began in 1976 and recognition was expanded by Congress and approved by President George H.W. Bush in 1990, which designated November as National American Indian Heritage Month.
Let us remember that the rich history and culture of our nation have been significantly influenced by American Indians. Their customs and traditions should be respected, as well as celebrated. To honor National American Indian Heritage Month, community celebrations, cultural, artistic, educational, and historical activities are encouraged.
I would love to see many events honoring the Native American and their Heritage. It would be great to take my grandkids to these events, so they can learn about the culture too!
