CALEDONIA — The Class C champion Keshequa Lady Indians went up against the Class CC Williamson Lay Marauders in the ‘C’ qualifier Tuesday night at the Hamilton Field Sports Complex, and fought all night long.

But they came up a goal short.

Playing with leading scorer Rissa Smith (18 goals, seven assists) hampered by a separated shoulder, the Lady Indians couldn’t muster enough firepower to counter a strong offensive effort by the Marauders in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss.

Williamson went up 1-0 about 10 minutes into the game, then 2-0 five minutes into the second half.

It wouldn’t deter the Indians, who finally found the net with 15 minutes to play when sophomore Gabrielle D’Angelo connected off a cross from eighth-grader Haley Russell to make it 2-1.

Even though their furious comeback attempt took on a new level of intensity after the goal, the Indians were unable to tie the game, and Williamson advanced NYS Class C tournament.

“We played well, but had some bad breaks,” said Keshequa coach Pete Goho. “It would have been nice to keep going, but we accomplished the goals we set for ourselves this season, and I’m very proud of this team for that.”

Keshequa finished their season 16-1-3, capturing the program's first sectional crown in nearly 20 years.
