Student vehicle use down, say SUNY Geneseo police

badgeGENESEO, NY — A report from the SUNY Geneseo campus announces that student vehicle use has declined in astounding fashion from a high of 2,292 vehicles which were registered on campus in the fall of 2002. The current number is about 1,006.

Today, only one-third of students living on campus have cars, compared with more than three-quarters seven years ago.

A corresponding increase in LATS shuttle bus use is evident with 161,000 riders availing themselves of the service during the last academic year.

Offsetting the decline in private vehicle ownership is the presence of the firm ‘Zip Car’ on campus. Students can lease a zip car for a modest hourly rate.

Only 44 students are presently making use of the service, but the number is likely to increase with the continuing decrease in student vehicles.
