ITHACA — Cal-Mum’s Nate Schiedel won a high school state wrestling title for the Red Raiders.

He has a collegiate state crown now.

The Binghamton University freshman captured the 184-pound title at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships last Saturday night at Cornell’s Newman Arena.

Schiedel, along with teammate Justin Lister (157 pounds) became the first BU state champs since the 2002 season.

Schiedel was the No. 2 seed and rolled to four wins and his first collegiate title. He earned a pin, a technical fall and a major decision. Schiedel bounced top-seeded Nate Holley of Cornell, 17-3, in the finals to raise his overall record to 19-6 on the season.

Schiedel is a sophomore academically but redshirted his first year leaving him four years of eligibility remaining. He is ranked 30th in the country.

Warsaw’s Ian Paddock, a freshman at Ohio State, improved his overall record to 17-6 with an impressive 13-2 win over Penn State’s Bryan Pearsall in a dual meet Sunday in Ohio.

Look for both Schiedel and Paddock to make a serious run in the next few years at a NCAA Division I national title.
