Caucuses for the March 16 elections in six Livingston County villages all occurred between Jan. 19 and 26. A village-by-village synopsis follows.

On election day, voters in the village elections will be making use of the new digital machines.

Avon

Democrats, caucusing on Jan. 25, nominated only their incumbent, Justice Joe Temperato. There were no nominations for trustees.

Tuesday night, Republicans selected incumbent Mark McKeown and Tim Batzel to run.

Caledonia

Village of Caledonia Republicans caucused Tuesday night to select their candidates for mayor and two village board seats.

Republicans nominated all three incumbent candidates for another four-year term including Mayor Joseph Caluorie and Trustees Teresa Truman and Steve Polo.

Caluorie thanked his family and Republican supporters for the nomination. He said the village board works well together with each member bringing their own perspective to the issues on the table but gaining consensus to do what is the right thing for the Village of Caledonia.

Truman has been in village government for 20 years between her current and former terms on the board. She says the board has accomplished a lot and thanked the Republicans for their support.

Polo is seeking a second term to the board. He agreed with Truman and Caluorie that the board works well together but he also added that the board works well with the residents.

He said the board has been successful in establishing good communication and dialogue with residents to keep them informed of the issues.

Geneseo

Based on his 24 years as village mayor and track record of community growth and fiscal management, Geneseo village Republicans chose Richard Hatheway to represent them in the March 16 election.

The party held their caucus Saturday morning, with 105 members casting votes. Sixty-seven supported Hatheway's nomination to 38 who voted for Wes Kennison.

Three other candidates received unopposed nominations at the Republican caucus: Ron Palmer for village justice, and Jamie Bennett and Paul Schmied for village trustee.

The Democrats will not be running a candidate against Mayor Richard Hatheway. For town council, the party has chosen Margaret Duf and incumbent Sandra Brennan. Tom Bushnell, the incumbent village justice, will also appear on the Democratic line.

Incumbent Democratic Trustee Brad Hill has not sought re-election.

Leicester

In Leicester, both trustees with expiring terms are not seeking re-election, Richard White, Jr. and Toni Pendergast.

Democrats in Leicester caucused on Jan. 19, naming Joseph Nahalka and Stella Krysica for the trustee positions, leaving the mayoral nomination open. Republicans, caucusing on Jan. 21, named Michelle Constantino and Michael Peete for the trustee positions, also naming their incumbent Mayor Wendy Garagozzo, who will not be opposed.

Mount Morris

In Mount Morris, a village trustee seat of one year duration is the only office to be decided.

This will fill a vacancy in the term of the late Bruce Lomnicki who died unexpectedly last year.

On Jan. 21, the Republican Party nominated James Murray. He was a former mayor and village trustee. On Jan. 25, the Democratic Party nominated newcomer Colleen Proctor. She is a special ed teacher at Keshequa Middle School. Both nominees were unopposed.

Attendance at both caucuses was sparse—approximately 15 people, including committee officials.

Nunda

Republican incumbent Mayor Jeffrey Essler has not sought re-election.

On Jan. 19 Republicans nominated Trustee Curtis Simmons for mayor. Simmons is in the middle of a four year term as trustee, so will not have to surrender his trustee status.

For two open trustees positions, Republicans nominated incumbent Jack Morgan and newcomer Douglas Gray. Also nominated was incumbent Republican Justice Gerald Hotchkiss.

Facing Simmons on the Democratic line will be Roger Smith, nominated on Jan. 20.

The only other Democratic nomination was the incumbent Trustee Robert Cox, making a three-way race for two trustee seats. Hotchkiss will run for justice unopposed.
