CALEDONIA — With Warsaw attempting to repeat last year’s feat of winning the team title at the Livingston Conference Wrestling Championships — arch-rival Letchworth came through and swarmed the Caledonia-Mumford gymnasium like a pack of hungry wolves.
Highlighted by Bucky Hendrickson, Chris Nevinger and Dave Woolley — Letchworth dominated from start to finish as they eased past Warsaw to claim the team crown for the second time in four years.
“We competed against some strong teams this year and I think that helped us in this tournament, which is always tough,” said Letchworth coach Chad Wittenrich, whose Indians also won the LCAA D-II title two weeks ago with the 38-32 victory over Warsaw. “We had kids step up and rise to the challenge. That’s why we wrestle the type of schedule we do. Our philosophy is what we do at the end of the season. Those tough matches are important down the road. Our kids might not have the records some of the other kids have but that’s because of the schedule we wrestle.”
Hendrickson, a senior, improved his record to 28-2 on the season as he decked previously unbeaten Geneseo senior Clayton Phelps, in 5:09 to capture the 140-pound title.
Hendrickson and Phelps were scoreless after the first period and then the Letchworth grappler took a 3-0 advantage after two with a three-point nearfall. Hendrickson turned up the heat in the third period to get the pin.
The victory for Hendrickson came at a time when a few people questioned whether he was ready to take that step to the “next level.”
“Bucky is an end of the year wrestler,” said coach Wittenrich. “Bucky, like a lot of the wrestlers, were football players and they got off to a later start this year. But, obviously Bucky looked very good this weekend.”
Nevinger improved to 29-0 on the season, but he did so having to empty his tank as he nipped Keshequa junior Korey Gillen 11-10 in double overtime for the 145-pound title.
The match was not only the most competitive of the finals — but it also brought the crowd to its feet several times with both wrestlers almost winning it in regulation.
Gillen actually took the lead when he scored five points nearly pinning Nevinger. But Nevinger would rally in the third, and then overtime to get the victory.
“Chris hasn’t been in a situation this year when he has been down in a match and when Gillen hit that big five pointer it really put Chris into a unfamiliar spot,” said Wittenrich. “ But, Chris rallied back and showed a lot of character to get the win.”
Woolley, a Letchworth junior, ran his record to 31-2 on the season as he pulled off the 4-2 upset victory over top-seeded Neal Vecellio (35-2) in the 160-pound finals.
“Watching David get the title was really special,” said coach Wittenrich. “He works hard in the wrestling room is and is very smart on the mat. He is looking to be one of the top wrestlers in his weight class (at Supersectionals).”
While Letchworth had three wrestlers hit the top of the LCAA podium — Warsaw brought home four individual crowns as they swept the first three weight classes with Josh Griffith (96), Austin Keough (103) and Joey Paddock (112) all winning titles, while Zak Griffith (189) gave the Tigers some lumber in the upper weights.
Josh Griffith, just a seventh grader, improved his record to 27-4 on the year as he nipped teammate and top-seeded Hanna Grisewood 3-2 in overtime. Griffith won the match when Grisewood was penalized a point in the extra session for an illegal scissors to the head. Grisewood was attempting to become the first female wrestler in LCAA history to win a title.
Keough, a Warsaw freshman, ran his record to 38-2 on the season with the convincing 10-2 major decision over Bath junior Brian Hojnoski.
Paddock, a Warsaw junior, improved to 41-1 on the year with the workmanlike 6-0 victory over Way-Co’s Skyler Hendley.
Paddock escaped his semifinal match when he edged Livonia senior Luke Kerhli 3-1 in a very close match.
Zak Griffith improved his overall mark to 41-3 on the year as he captured his fourth LCAA title defeating Avon freshman Bryce Mazurowski by a 13-4 count in a match that proved that Griffith is one of the LCAA’s most elite wrestlers of all-time, but also that Mazurowski has a bright future.
Despite Warsaw having a 4-3 advantage in individual champs — this team crown was Letchworth’s from the get-go.
The Indians built a 99-62 lead after Friday’s first two rounds and upped it to a 70-point cushion heading into the championship rounds.
Letchworth also had four wrestlers make the championship finals but each placed second.
At 125 pounds, Way-Co junior Jon Miller improved his record to 36-1 on the season as he beat Letchworth’s Austin Harding by a 5-1 count.
Harding’s points however for placing second were valuable as the No. 4 seed pulled off the upset in the semifinals by beating top-seed and defending champion John VanSlyke, of York, by a 3-2 score.
In the 130-pound finals, Keshequa’s Travis Baker won his first LCAA title with the 6-2 victory over Letchworth junior Anthony Harding.
Much like his younger brother Austin, Anthony pulled off the upset in the semifinals as he nipped Geneseo junior and top-seeded Tyler Carman 1-0 as he scored an escape late in the match to win it.
At 135 pounds, Le Roy junior and top-seeded Tyler Fenstermaker ran his record to 31-3 on the season with the 3-0 victory over Letchworth senior Dakota Hendrickson.
Dansville senior Bryan Wood won the 285-pound title with a pin in 5:38 over Letchworth’s Ric Stone.
Le Roy, which placed fourth with 109 points, had two champions including Fenstermaker, and senior Jon Casper (30-1), who easily repeated his LCAA crown as he breezed through the 215-pound title pinning Keshequa’s Jordan Shute in 2:30 in the title match.
The most outstanding wrestler award went to Hornell senior Austin Dwyer, who ran his perfect record to 20-0 on the season with the 4-2 victory over Warsaw eighth-grader Burke Paddock, who bumped up a weight class to take on the Red Raider state rep from a year ago.
Bath, which placed third as a team with 144 points, came away with two champs as senior Kyle Conrad bested Geneseo sophomore Devon Rodriquez by a 15-0 technical fall count while Rams’ senior Nick Uram pinned Avon’s Byron Howe in 3:16 to win the 171-pound title.
Dansville head coach Ralph Perry was honored before the finals as the LCAA Coach of the Year.
The Section V Wrestling Championships will take place Feb. 5-6 at various locations.
Instead of the usual four small school classifications, this year’s tournament will have only three classes.
Class BBB will take place in Bath; Class BB will be hosted by Warsaw while Class B will take place in Canisteo-Greenwood.
Letchworth is hoping to make the clean sweep when they compete in ‘BB.’
“We are going to have to stay really focused the next two weeks and also get healthy,” said coach Wittenrich. “Our team realizes that winning the sectional title is our goal. There are some quality programs like Holley and Warsaw that will be very tough. Sectionals will be a real test for us.”
