Letter: Be sure to vote in village elections

Submitted by Sylvia Sawyer, Mount Morris

Local elections will soon be here. Now some probably feel that there is little significance in these elections. Many won’t even bother to find out who is running for local office, let alone plan on voting.

I am going to encourage all who are of legal age to vote, to do something that can change that prevailing attitude. Register to vote.

Make it your business to find out who is running for office. Any office from that of local dogcatcher right up to the President.

Find out what the candidates believe in, what they support and what they envision for us as a nation. Then, vote for that person who reflects your ideals. If no one is running who does reflect your ideals-consider running for office yourself.

Become an informed voter and a responsible citizen of our great country. Read the Constitution. Learn about the founding of our Republic. Discover for yourself what is “Constitutional.”

You will probably be surprised by how far away we have drifted from the original ideas of our founding fathers.

Now, whether you vote Republican, or Democrat or any other party doesn’t matter. What matters is that you vote for the person, not the party and that you make an informed choice.

Voting is a right for us, but in some countries it is a privilege that doesn’t exist.

Let’s keep our country free and independent by participating in the process and keeping informed.
